Hello,

I am hoping to find a solution as to why Fast Avatar Capture will not allow me to scan myself. Kinect is recognized and I can see myself but as soon as I scan or try to create avatar I get a couple of different errors depending how I try to launch application.  Launching from start menu shortcut"an The item FastAvatar BAT is missing or moved". Also the original shortcut created by the program always says that the shortcut is missing.  When i try to "fix it" as it recommends i get another error "Windows cannot find FastAvatarCapture exe.  Ihave to go into file folder to start the app manually. Then it wont allow me to scan : an underhanded error has occurred" I am running Windows 10.

I did not change any settings while installing just let it do its thing. Any direction would be helpful. Anyone else have a similar issue?

thank you in advance,

colcamp,

Same issues.  Also on Windows 10.  Had same issue with the .bat shortcut not finding the executable in the file folder (the installed folder structure seems a bit odd - almost everything in 'bin' is in Audio directory, so I wondered if there were linking error or permission problems).

I can run it under debug in Visual Studio 2015, but it can't load scanned points so doesn't reconstruct anything.  It also crashes when I try to select PCL Fusion.  The Console says "Error: could not load KinectFusion PCL plugin."

Any ideas?

Peter

Sorry everybody. I'll retest on a Windows 10 machine and try to fix the problem. Stay tuned.

Ok, I posted a new version that should fix that problem (FastAvatarCapture_030716.exe). You can get it from the download page:

Hi,

First of all, thank you for the wonderful work and sharing it with us. Much appreciated!

Just a quick note - I've downloaded the fast avatar capture yesterday, and it gave me this problem of not recognizing the kinect drivers. After some time I've found this thread and figured out that the auto generated mail with the download link still points to the old version. Once downloaded directly from your website worked out perfectly!

I'd also like to ask why have you decided to go with the Kinect v1 and not the Kinect v2 or the realsense camera?

Thanks again,

Avihay Bar.

Thanks, I'll see why the download isn't giving you the right file.

We started the project around 2 years ago before the Kinect 2 was available. The algorithm relies heavily on the fact that the Kinect 1 can tilt up and down and stitch together multiple images with each pose. Unfortunately, Microsoft didn't distribute the Kinect 2 with a motor, so it doesn't have the same capability, even though the RGB camera on the Kinect 2 is much better (the Kinect 1 only has 640x480 RGB camera, which greatly affects the quality of the output).  Same problem with the RealSense; no motor.

There might be  hybrid solution down the road; either adding a better camera for the Kinect 1 (look at the Occipital Structure Sensor which does this; it atttaches to an iPad) or adding a controllable motor to the Kinect 2, but we haven't tackled this yet.

The most interesting aspect of this technology (to me) is the ability to scan yourself without needing an external user and with a single piece of commodity hardware. There are scanning solutions that produce better output, but are more costly or require an operator. Hopefully we'll have some time to improve this tech in the near future.
