Hi! I'm looking into developing a web app which features a SmartBody character.

The web app should be able to run on Chrome for Android tablets. Initially, I planned to use the Unity engine but it seems like the web player is not supported on Android tablets. Any suggestions on how to approach this? I'm not really looking into making a native app. Thanks!

There is a web version of SmartBody that is in early 'experimental' stage here:

http://smartbody.ict.usc.edu/J.....martbodyJS

and by experimental I mean:

1) We have ported nearly the entire SmartBody code base to Javascript using Emscripten, and made it work in a web browser.

2) The main SmartBody runtime is about 20 mb, and it also needs data (motions, character meshes, etc.).

3) We haven't spent time figuring out how to reduce the size of downloads or creating pretty 'progress bars'. We have created web-based versions of our desktop demo, without any consideration as to the amount of data that is needed for download (which can be hundreds of mb)

4) some things don't work (sound, any service that requires an external application, like text-to-speech)

5) The Python scripting doesn't work, but we replaced that with a Javascript binding instead, which is very similar to the Python one.

So if you want to experiment with the web-based version of SmartBody, you are welcome to do so. The codebase is in the /javascript/ branch of the source code repository, or you can simply download the SmartBody Javascript files from the server and create your own app.

Thanks for the information! Aside from the web version, is there a way to use the non-experimental version for Web Applications?

You can use the web version of SmartBody, if that's what you are asking...?

Aside from the experimental web version, how would I be able to use smartbody in a web app?

If I understand you correctly, you want to run SmartBody in a Chrome browser on Android. You can do this with the version of SmartBody for Javascript (experimental version). We don't have a non-experimental version (or stable version) of it; one of my team members in currently working on improving this version. Other than that, I don't know of a way to run SmartBody in a browser.
